Louisiana State University uses the standard 4.0 scale but does NOT use +/- grading for the GPA calculation in most undergraduate programs — plain letter grades (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0). LSU computes both semester GPA and cumulative GPA across all attempts.

FAQ — LSU

01What is a good LSU GPA?

A 3.0 GPA at LSU is solid. 3.5+ qualifies for the Dean’s List. Latin honors at graduation: Cum Laude 3.50+, Magna Cum Laude 3.70+, Summa Cum Laude 3.90+. President’s Honor Roll requires a 4.0 GPA in a semester. Graduate-school applicants at LSU need a 3.0 minimum and 3.5+ to be competitive.

02Does LSU use plus or minus grades for GPA?

For most undergraduate programs LSU uses straight letter grades: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0 with no +/- adjustment. Some graduate and professional programs (Law, Medicine, some grad programs) do use +/- grading; check your specific program handbook.

03What is the LSU honors cutoff for Latin honors?

At graduation, the cumulative GPA thresholds for Latin honors are: Cum Laude 3.50, Magna Cum Laude 3.70, Summa Cum Laude 3.90. Additional requirements include a minimum number of LSU credits (typically 60+) so that transfer-heavy students don’t qualify based on transfer GPA alone.

04What GPA do I need to keep my LSU TOPS scholarship?

TOPS (Taylor Opportunity Program for Students) scholarship recipients must maintain at least a 2.30 cumulative GPA after the freshman year and 2.50 thereafter, with 24 credit hours earned each academic year. The TOPS Honors level requires 3.0+ to keep.
