4 classesThe California State University (CSU) system uses the standard 4.0 GPA scale with +/- grading across its 23 campuses (CSULB, San Jose State, Sacramento State, San Diego State, etc.). Each CSU campus has its own Dean’s List and Latin honors thresholds; the systemwide minimum is 2.0 for graduation.

FAQ — CSU
01What is a good GPA at a Cal State?
A 3.0 GPA at any CSU campus is considered solid. 3.5+ usually qualifies for Dean’s List, although the exact threshold varies by campus. Latin honors range across campuses: Cum Laude around 3.50, Magna Cum Laude around 3.75, Summa Cum Laude around 3.90. CSU graduate programs typically expect 3.0+ for admission.
02Are GPAs comparable between different Cal State campuses?
Yes — all 23 CSU campuses use the same 4.0 scale with +/- grading, so the calculation is identical. However, individual campuses can have different grade-distribution norms (Cal Poly engineering may grade harder than other campuses), and admission thresholds for transfer students are set per-campus.
03Does Cal State use plus/minus grading?
Yes. All CSU campuses use +/- grading: A+ / A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some courses are graded CR/NC (Credit / No Credit) and don’t factor into GPA.
04What is the CSU minimum GPA to graduate?
All CSU campuses require a 2.0 cumulative GPA in three areas to graduate: overall coursework, CSU coursework, and major coursework. Falling below 2.0 in any one of these triggers academic probation. Some impacted majors (Nursing, Engineering, Business at certain campuses) require higher progression GPAs of 2.5-3.0.
