FAQ
01What is weighted GPA?
Weighted GPA adds bonus points for advanced courses on top of the standard 4.0 scale. Honors classes typically add +0.5, AP or IB classes add +1.0. The maximum weighted GPA is usually 5.0 (straight A’s in only AP/IB courses).
02How do you calculate weighted GPA?
For each course, add the course-type bonus to the letter grade value: Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0. So an A in an AP class equals 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0 points. Multiply each weighted grade by its credits, sum, then divide by total credits.
03How much is an AP class worth?
On a standard weighted scale, an AP class adds 1.0 point to the underlying letter grade. An A in AP becomes 5.0 instead of 4.0, a B in AP becomes 4.0 instead of 3.0. Some schools cap AP weighting at 4.5 rather than 5.0.
04Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Most colleges look at both. Unweighted GPA shows your raw grades; weighted GPA shows the course rigor you chose. Selective colleges expect a strong weighted GPA reflecting AP or IB coursework. Many admissions offices recalculate using their own internal formula.
05What is a 5.0 weighted GPA?
A 5.0 weighted GPA means straight A’s in only AP or IB courses — the maximum on most weighted scales. Very few students achieve a true 5.0 because schedules typically mix advanced and regular classes. Anything above 4.0 indicates strong AP/Honors performance.
