Final Exam Grade

Your numbers

%

Your overall course grade before the final, as a percentage.

%

How much the final exam counts toward the final course grade (typically 15–40%).

%

What you want your overall course grade to be when finals are done.

The math: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) / weight. We solve for the final score that gets you there.

FAQ

01What grade do I need on my final exam?

Use the formula: required final = (target_grade − current_grade × (1 − final_weight)) / final_weight. For example, with a 85% current grade, a 30% final weight, and an A target (90%): required final = (90 − 85 × 0.7) / 0.3 = 103%. In that case, an A is no longer reachable. This calculator handles the math for you.

02How do I calculate my final exam grade?

Enter three numbers: your current grade in the course as a percentage, the weight of the final as a percentage (e.g. 25 for 25% of the course), and your target course grade as a percentage. The calculator solves for the required final exam score.

03Is it possible to fail a final and still pass the class?

Yes, depending on your current grade and the final’s weight. If you have a strong current grade and the final is only 15-20% of the total, you can fail the final and still pass overall. The calculator tells you the lowest possible final score that still hits a passing course grade.

04What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

If your required score exceeds 100, your target grade is no longer mathematically reachable — even a perfect final won’t get you there. You’ll need to lower your target, ask about extra credit, or focus on next-semester recovery. The calculator clearly flags this case.

05Does this work for any class, not just GPA-based courses?

Yes. The formula applies to any single course with a current grade and a weighted final exam — math, English, science, electives. It’s a course-level calculator, not a GPA-level one. To raise your overall GPA, use the GPA calculator on this site instead.
